I am going to jailbreak my iPhone 3gs. After I do that is there anything i need to know how to do/tips on using Cydia? I'm just nervous that i would know what to do once the jailbreaking process is complete. And one other question: will the jailbreak erase my messages, contacts or reset my icons? Thanks!!!!!

Answer
Jailbreaking will not erase your messages. contact, or reset your icons. However, it is suggested to sync to iTunes, and back your iPhone up before jailbreaking. Also, if you update your phone through iTunes, iTunes will delete all of your jailbreak data, which results in your phone being un-jailbroken. None of your contacts, messages. photos, etc. will be erased. In other words, when you update, it gets rid of all jailbreak-related stuff to do it. Nothing else disappears from your iPhone.

Good repositories to add to Cydia:

http://cydia.xSellize.com/
http://iRepo.us/
http://cydia.imodzone.net/
http://repo.insanelyi.com
http://cydia.hackulo.us/
http://repo.hackyouriphone.org
http://www.sinfuliphonerepo.com/ (Not sure what's up with their name, but just add it anyway; their software is still OK.)

Here is a list of some awesome stuff you can get from Cydia. (Make sure you add the repositories above, first!)

Winterboard - You probably have this already. It lets you use themes and stuff!

Barrel - It adds a 3D effect for your icons. For example, when you slide across them with your finger to the next page, it rotates a cube, or does a barrel roll, and a lot of other stuff. (You have to see it to understand it, just get it from one of the repositories for free; it's awesome.

BiteSMS - A good replacement for the Messages app that Apple provides by default. Instead of having to go ALL the way to the Messages app, you get a convenient pop-up when you get a message, and you can reply to it in the pop-up! Also has a bunch more fun features :D

BytaFont - Lets you change fonts on your phone. Quite a simple explanation :D

FontSwap - Almost exactly like BytaFont.

OverBoard - Lets you see an overview of your pages! (You should get it first, it's hard to describe, but epic.)

NyanSliders - Nyan Cat! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2-TGUlw⦠It replaces your sliders with animated Nyan Cats, lol.

MobileVolumeSound - Makes the Mac noise for whenever you turn your volume up and down. I love this one because it just sounds awesome!

Cyntacts - A simple tweak. In the Contacts and Phone apps, you can see contact pictures in the list.

Color Keyboard - Keyboard customization!

Cydelete - Instead of going into Cydia and deleting stuff, you can delete stuff you got from Cydia in the same way you delete apps!

Installous - Free apps, need I say more?

Dreamboard - Amazing. You need to see it to believe it. Like Winterboard, but more epic. (Don't get rid of Winterboard, though. This is not a replacement or supplement of Winterboard.

Display Recorder - Records your display!

FullPreview - Longer previews for music in the iTunes app!

FlipOver - Phones locks or mutes when you lay it upside down, and unlocks when you pick it back up!

Callbar - Instead of a giant screen appearing when peopel call you, their name, and the accept/deny buttons appear on the status bar! (This is a really good one!)

AskToCall - No more accidentally calling people! This asks you if you actually want to call the number before you do!

Action Menu - Better menu for copying and pasting stuff.

Action Menu Plus - Addons for Action Menu, like Wikipedia, Google search, etc. (You can select something, and look it up on Wikipedia! Isn't that GREAT?)

SBSettings - Absolutely great. You don't know what you are missing if you don't have this!

Graviboard - Shake your phone to have your icons fall down! Also, you can tilt to make them go different directions and stuff.

Infinifolders - Have as many apps in a folder as you want!

iRetina++ - Great if you have an iPhone 4! (If you don't DO NOT GET THIS. This is meant only for Retina displays.

iTunes 10 Icon - Changes the iTunes icon to a better one. This is a WinterBoard theme.

Mail Enhancer - Adds awesome features to your Mail app!

PrivaCy - Opts you out of ads and stuff.

Safari Download Manager - Nice Download Manager built into Safari!

Speed for Maps - Adds a speedometer to Maps!

Springtomize - Customize a ton of stuff regarding how your home page looks, animations, etc.

VideoLock - Keeps playing a video, even when the screen locks! Also allows you to listen to YouTube without being in the app! :D

VoiceActivator - Custom Voice Control Commands!

3G Unrestrictor - Trick your phone into thinking it's on Wi-Fi, so you download bigger files from the App Store, play certain games on 3G, etc. (This one is awesome! It even allows for FaceTime over 3G!)

How to get my iPhone battery to last longer?

DRUMMER4LI

My battery seems to die around 4 pm if I stop charging it at 7 am. (Have to go to school...) how do I get it to last longer? Maybe to 6-7ish pm? I listen to music ALOT if that does any damage, and in school, I only get 1-2 bars.

Answer
There's a whole load of 'hidden' options you can turn off which significantly improve battery, do all of these;

Go to Privacy > Location Services > System services (at the bottom) and turn off everything in there. (You don't NEED any of those, but you can enable them if you need any)

Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars (on the main settings page) > Scroll to the bottom and turn off 'Shared calendar alerts' and 'New Invitation Alerts'

Remove any apps you aren't using from push notifications by going to Notifications (on the main settings page) and turning off the apps you don't need notifications for. Make sure they're fully off, by tapping the name of the app and sliding EVERYTHING in there to off, otherwise it will continue using battery.

Go to General > Siri and turn off 'Raise to Speak' or turn off Siri altogether.

If you don't use FaceTime/iMessage; turn them off.
FaceTime: Go to Settings > FaceTime > and slide it to OFF.
iMessage: Go to Settings > Messages > slide 'iMessage' to OFF.

Go to Settings > Photos & Camera > and turn off 'Shared Photo Streams' unless you're using them.

Go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Turn off the switches in the 'Automatic Downloads' section unless you're using them

Go to Settings > Music > ensure 'Shake to Shuffle' and 'EQ' are both OFF. You could also sign out of Home Sharing, if you don't use it and you're currently logged in.

General (and perhaps obvious) tips;

Ensure bluetooth and personal hotspot are off when not in use. You may also consider turning off wifi and cellular when not in use.
Lower the brightness of your screen by as much as possible.

I hope I helped, even if you only do a few of these, you'll probably notice an improvement in battery life.
