I like all of these, I think they are likely the best of similar Apps.

The problem will be, when a photo is dark, it's not sharp, so you won't be able to just lighten it up and have it look great, there may be a lot of *noise*. But, depending on the photo, you may be able to make it much better. Also, some of the Apps have great photo effects to play around with.

With the new Apple iPhone 3G coming out does this make my iPhone obsolete now? Software updates?

Is Apple planning on updating the existing customers that have the iPhone to the new 3G's capabilities or are we so to say screwed?

No, your original iPhone is not obsolete. In early July Software Update 2.0 will be available to the original iPhone. The update will include: The Apps Store, Enterprise support with remote wipe, iWork support, MS Office support, MobileMe support (the new .mac), mass email move and delete, contacts search, more languages, and a scientific calculator when in landscape orientation.

Here's what you won't have: You won't get data service at twice the speed, but at a cost of twice the battery drain and an extra $10 per month and you'll have to pay another $5 a month to retain 200 SMS messages. You won't have an Assisted-GPS built-in showing your exact position and live tracking, but with the original at least you have a general location finder. You won't have improved audio. You won't have geo tagging on your photos. You won't have the improved camera software with improved images. You won't have a missing dock. Since there are several different docks available now, I guess it's a personal choice which one, but the docks probably range between $30 to $50. Lastly, in order to allow better reception for GPS, the metal back was changed to plastic. I prefer the metal.

In order to get 3G and/or GPS on the original iPhone, it would have to be taken apart and have a 3G radio chip and GPS added. Too much trouble and too expensive.

Personally I am still satisfied with my original iPhone. I can wait for the next version to come out. I also think the original iPhone will retain their value for awhile because T-Mobile has not launched a 3G network yet and the iPhone 3G won't operate on the the same frequencies. AT&T uses 1900 and 2100 MHz, while T-Mobile uses 1700 and 2100 MHz. So unless those T-Mobile subscribers want an iPhone with GPS, they won't be able to get 3G service. It's also yet to be determined if the iPhone 3G can be unlocked or if it can, how long it will take.

By the way, the iPhone 3G is a bit thicker in the center with tapered edges and just a tad lighter due to the plastic back.

I'm not eligible for an upgrade for a few months but want to start looking into phones now so I don't make an impulse decision when it comes time.

I'm not too into the technical aspects of phones. Outside of calls and texts I really only use my phone for social networking apps. I don't take many pictures but I still like a high quality photo.

I'm asking this because maybe you know something about these phones that can help make my decision easier.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is what I would buy. Or if that's not available on your carrier, the HTC 8X or any of the upper end Windows Phones.

Why? Because the most important thing for me is how enjoyable the phone is to use, and in that regard WP8 is in a league of its own. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said Windows Phone was "more beautiful and intuitive" than Android and iOS, and joked that Steve Jobs had been "reincarnated at Microsoft". Even little things like the menus and the text are ridiculously pretty. The Lumia 920 is also widely considered to have the best camera among smartphones. All are capable of taking decent pics in daylight, but when you compare it to the iPhone 5 in low light, you can see it has the clear advantage:

If you've never used a Windows Phone, it's worth driving out to a store and spending some time with one. For your needs of social networking and a good camera, the Lumia 920 seems to be the best fit. Otherwise, my second choice would be the HTC One. So far almost every review of the Galaxy S4 has said that, while the S4 is a good phone, the HTC is just a little better. The HTC One also comes with the arguably best Android skin, and the only one that can even come close to WP8 in terms of design.
