How do you add text to a photo using iPhoto?

I just want to add a sentence to a picture and don't know how to do it on my Mac. I don't want to make a card because then I have to buy it.

iPhoto is not an editing program for text and the like. iPhoto can do all kinds of photo editing, as well as album organization, interaction with other iLife apps, etc. Just no text adding. Use any of the following graphics editors to add text:
