Answer
Hi! I am an experienced iPhoneographer (featured in Mashable, CNN, Sky News, and the NY Times), and here are some of my favourite iPhoneography applications to use:

1. Instagram: this is an amazing FREE iPhone photo-filtering and photo-sharing app, where you can take a picture within the app, add one of a number of great-looking "vintage-y" filters (including an inbuilt "tilt-shift" blur effect you can add before any of the other colour filters), and then share the photo with your "followers" within the application. It is like a photo-sharing twitter, where you can follow other interesting users and have them follow you back. The quality of the iPhone photos shared within Instagram is surprisingly high and the community feel really makes it a great application where you can get useful feedback about your photos. It's often number one in the Free iPhone Photography apps on the App store. You can "like" photos and people can "like" your photos, it can get very addictive! My IG username is @streetstylish, and I recommend the following ten users as having consistently excellent iPhoneography photostreams on Instagram: @fashion @takinyerphoto @sionfullana @anton_in_nyc @eros_sana @thomas_k @neriad @bondavidsf @xxxyxyz @dutchie68

2. Hipstamatic: this app allows you to very easily take a (square format) iPhone photograph and instantly applies a filtered look based on the "Lens" and "Film" that you choose. It comes with a few "Lenses" and "Films" packaged with the initial download, and you can also buy more later if you want to experiment more. It is very slickly designed and easy to use. You can't change your Lens or Film choice at a later date if you decide you want to experiment, but the effects are very high quality and accurately replicate some vintage films and lenses for the iPhone. It currently costs £1.49 in the UK App store.

3. Camera+ (by tap tap tap, NOT the other one in the app store): £0.69 in the UK app store right now, and I highly recommend it both for taking photos instead of the native Apple camera app and for editing pictures. You can take a "normal" photo from your camera roll, import it to the Lightbox in Camera+, and add a variety of effects and frames to your photo and then easily save it back to your camera roll or share it on Facebook. You can use it to crop your photos and add different colour effects. Their "Clarity" filter is really great for a lot of photos, and adds a pseudo-HDR effect, making all of the areas of your photo look more evenly exposed.

Other great apps:

Free ones -- Adobe Photoshop (great for basic editing, like color saturation etc), Photosynth (interactive panorama capture and sharing developed by Microsoft), Color Splash Free (you can use this to make your photo black and white while keeping certain areas of the picture in colour), Old Photo (use this to give your photos a real 'retro' feel)

Paid ones -- Camera Genius (camera and editing app), Filterstorm (really advanced editing similar to photoshop), Diptic (for creating collages of different photos), PictureShow (great for editing photos into really vintage styles using different filters and frames, you will love this one!), Photo fx (great, intuitive photo editing application), Picfx (you can add lots of texture, noise, and filters to your photos with this one! Great app!)

Good luck and happy snapping!

Does anyone know of any really good apps to make edits for instagram?

Peetaluvr2

I was trying to do some edits, one direction in particular, but I was wondering what are some good apps to use for them? Not like ones that take away glare and change the lighting etc., but like collages and sorta hipster stuff like where you can add little things and do a collage and add words and edit it and cut around the pic and stuff? Thanks!

Answer
there are number of good apps to make edits for instagram. they are listed below,
1. Photoshop Express:
A staple in photo editing, Photoshop Express lets you crop, and adjust exposure, color, tint, hue, saturation, contrast and levels, along with classic filters. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
2. Phototreats:
Enhances photos by giving you a wide range of filters, organized by the category of the photo, such as âMy Eats,â âMy Style,â or âMy Activity.â Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

3. moreBeaute2:
Want to get rid of that blemish or wrinkle? This app smooths over and brightens your complexion with manual settings that you can adjust, which is especially great for creating beauty photos on your mobile device. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

4. Pixlr-o-matic:
Lets you make basic corrections before adding filters (which are better than most found on Instagram) and effects, such as rain, sparkles, and neon lights. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android.

5. Color Splash:
Give your photos an extra artsy touch by converting them to black and white and adding just a splash of color. This app is awesome for detail shots, or if you want to draw attention to a particular part of the photo. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

6. LINE Camera:
Decorate your photos with cutesy frames, stamps, filters, anime characters, brushes, and text, and easily share them on your social networks. how to take grungy/vintage-y looking photos?

tennis_tac

So I've been trying forever to figure out how people take those grungy looking photos as if the photo was taken with flash but it's more muted, the colors are faded, and the entire photo often looks kind of hazy/blue-ish? I figure it can't just be film photography, because the fad seems too common. Is it a specific type of camera (disposable/digital/point and shoot?), or setting on a camera?
I personally own Canon Rebel DSLR and have never been able to manipulate it to take photos that look like the following. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Here are just some examples I found on tumblr of the *effect* I'm talking about:

Answer
A good way is to use a disposable camera and then scan the pictures into your computer. This is a resulthttp://www.facebook.com/?ref=tn_tnmn#!/photo.php?fbid=4566323429745&set=a.1592495725911.81998.1041439210&type=3&theater
Also you can get apps on ipone and probbable other iphones that can make it go vintage.
try cameras that are old and not good quality, canon cameras are probbably to good quality to do this.
Disposable camera is the best way x

If you sync using iTunes, use the iPod backup tool then press "restore". If your jailbreak version does not allow iTunes sync, back up your memory and then import it all into iTunes after unjailbreaking. You cannot unjailbreak an iPhone without erasing everything first.

How do I sync my iPhone to a new computer without everything being erased?

Neil Piar

My old PC died. I am trying to sync my iPhone 3GS with a new laptop. When I go to sync it, it prompts me to erase my iPhone and replace the data with that on the new computer- thus losing music, videos, photos, apps, etc. I am sure this must be a widespread problem. Please help me! BTW...I am not computer savvy.

Answer
Well there is a program that Apple offers called "home sharing" It allows you to Sync your iPhone/iPod to up tp five computers at a time! I am not sure if you need your old computer for it to work though...

i'm getting bored of my apps and would like to get some new ones.

Answer
I like Ambiance because you can download and mix sounds and sleep. or have in the background. There's many more apps like this - search for "ambient sounds."

"Awesome Facts" is full of interesting facts and useless information. They upgrade constantly - and are in the many thousands now.

I have my credit card and bank apps on here for quick access.

I transfer my pdf's to the iPhone using ChiliPrinter - there are others, I'm sure.

I put the "Crazy Candle" on at night and it plays iTunes in the background.

The "Elite Browser" is great for looking at web pages in full screen.

Google Earth is a must.

I use iNapkin for notes.

IndieBound to buy books.

Flash my Brain for flash cards.

Individual newspaper apps for reading around the world.

Phanfare's Photon immediately transfers my photos to a web site.

Shazam identifies music by holding your iPhone up to a speaker or in a car, etc.

Sound Pro is a lot of fun and can be remotely controlled from another computer or iPhone.

Stanza for free ebooks.

Wallpaper Labeler to put your email or whatever on your home-screen if you lose your iPhone.

Memengo Wallet for your passwords & confidential info.

For recipes, do searches for the type or nationality of food you are interested in.

Yahoo Messenger.

Good Luck.

Which is a better reading device the kindle or the nook?

Lindsay Ba

Im looking to get a digital reading device and am wondering about the differences between the two. Is the book only for barnes and noble? Which is the better purchase? Are there other features then just reading?

Answer
Hi, Lindsay Baer, Nook from Barnes & Noble is the best combination of price and features of the eReaders market. When choosing an eReader, you need to consider not only the physical properties of the device, but also compare eBook stores behind it. Sony has never been a contender for any comparison by anyone as they only have like 5 books in their Ebook store and their devices are way overpriced for what they offer. Borders is behind Kobo/Cruz devices in US and as you might of heard, Borders is on a brink of bankruptcy. Kindle and Nook are the only devices to be considered as their eBook stores have over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available.
Having that out of the way, you should then decide which screen you want: e-Ink or LCD. It depends on what you're reading. If just black & white novels then the better one would be Kindle or e-Ink Nook from Barnes & Noble. If you read electronic magazines or college text books with a lot of color graphs and charts or childrenâs' books with a lot of pictures then the better would be Nook Color LCD from Barnes & Noble. Then, you should understand the limitations of e-Ink eReaders - they are limited to be black & white for now they "blink" at each ebookâs page turn, they're not too good for web browsing, they need external light source for reading when dark, and they cannot handle videos.
Whichever device you choose, here's the advantages of the Nookâs (both e-Ink black & white and Nook Color) over Kindle:
- Any Barnes & Noble store provides free Wi-Fi to Nook's
- Nook allows to lend Nook books for two weeks to friends and family or share with your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone, iPod and iPad, etc.) Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
Nook Color is worth mentioning separately as this is a hybrid Android eReader/tablet device, something between Kindle and iPad. Even though Nook Color has LCD touchscreen, it's a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight and produces less glare all of which are dooming reading on iPad. Also, the screen is amazing and readable/viewable at wide angles.
Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, the original e-Ink Nook might be better for you. If you want something more from your device (color graphs and charts of college text books, childrens books, photos and videos, web sites in full color) at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.
Nook Color has several apps that already come with the device (Pandora Internet radio, QuickOffice, etc.) Also, Barnes & Noble recently released Nook SDK and Nook Developer platform that will allow most of the existing 100,000 Android apps be ported to it. Also, you can use the Social Settings screen to link your NOOK Color to your Facebook account and your Twitter account. You can also import all your contacts from your Google Gmail account. Once you have linked to Facebook and Twitter and set up email contacts, you can lend and borrow books, recommend books, and share favorite quotes with your friends.

I've been searching and downloading apps and they're all corny and never do what they say they'll do. I'm looking for a mirror effect app that's simple and free. Please any suggestions will be great!

Answer
There are tons of great photo apps for the iPhone and iPad.

Photo Editor - Snapseed is a comprehensive photo app that you'll wind up using every day. Photoshop mobile is another editor to consider. And Befunky is great too with the addition of more fun editing features.

Swap Photo Parts - With Juxtaposer you can take one part from one photograph and add that part into a second photo. With FACE SWITCH you can do just that, switch faces between multiple photos.

Panoramic Photos - Pano features the ability to take 360-degree panoramas using up to sixteen photos with a semi-transparent guide helps you line up each shot perfectly. With Pano's alignment tools, blending, and colour-correction algorithms provide you can really get seamless images in just seconds - I have been amazed.

Text on Photos - Photophrase blends beautiful typography with pictures to create unique images you can share. You can use Photophrase for photo captioning, photo sharing, and just plain photo fun.

Funny Faces - Faceship offers tons of face-changing effects! Besides the TinyFace, effects include a bubbleface, square head, nerd glasses (with enlarged eyeballs!), catface, the best moustache ever, some crazy mirror effects, horrible zits, sad face and happy faces, fat neck, and a bunch more. Another option is PhotoGoo which lets you turn your photos to Goo! Create funny facial expressions from your friends faces.

Un-crop - If you've ever taken a hasty photo on your phone and didn't leave enough room on the outside, AntiCrop is the app can uncrop those photos by filling in the edges with just a few swipes.

I see all these people's pictures and they're amazing, for example, I will see a picture of someone, and it looks like they've drawn a cartoon Indian hat on their hand. Another one looked like a girl courtseying, but her skirt was see through, and you could see the city. One more was a girl, with a shape outlining the picture, like a triangle or circle, and it had this really cool text. And the last one I saw that I liked, was a girls eye but her pupil had the galaxy pattern. Does ANYONE know what apps they do to use these? Thanks!

Answer
Citrify, iPiccy, PicMonkey, Ribbet, Picadilo, Fotor, FotoFlexer or Lunapic are great all round web based and FREE editing tools. Adobe, makers of the expensive Photoshop, has a free website version in Photoshop Express. If you are a former Picnik user than Picmonkey and Ribbet will be your best choices.

If you need/want more features downloading GIMP is a great options. Still free, but you have to download the software.

Un-crop - If you've ever taken a hasty photo on your phone and didn't leave enough room on the outside, AntiCrop is the app can uncrop those photos by filling in the edges with just a few swipes.

How do I transfer my pics and music from my laptop to my Samsung Galaxy Note 2?

Jeanie

I just upgraded my phone from a Iphone 4 to a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and boy of boy are they different. I love the new phone but I hate the fact that they don't come with papers,a booklet,or even a disc to learn about them. Atleast with the iphone I had Apple support, which I had to pay for. But so far anything I need to know about the phone I have to look it up online, like how to check my voice mail, how to turn on the hot spot, how to how to lol but I have not been able to figure out how to transfer stuff from my computer to it. I have all my music and ringtones I had made with the iphone still on my computer,I have it in itunes and in my windows media. I still have to keep itunes cause my husband has a iphone and I have a ipod. I have alot of pictures and music I want to transfer from the laptop to the phone or copy and send but I can't figure out how. Also when I am on facebook with the phone, how do you save pics? Thank you to all answers in advance and if you think of anything else that you think I might need to know about the phone please include,it seems I don't know how to do anything with it yet, took me a bit to figure out how to text and add apps but that and talking and web searching is all I have done so far. The thing is smarter than me lol.

Answer
I know exactly how you feel. I received my ATT Galaxy Note 2 at the end of January. Even though I'm a computer Professional/Technician, this was my official first smart phone and I had no idea how to use it at all.. I had never used Android before, either.

Well, the day I received it in the mail, I went to Staples and bought a 32GB MicroSD card and then went next door to an ATT store and had them install for free. I told the guy I just got the phone today and he showed me the basics.. like how to hold it to create or remove additional Home Screen. Over time, I learned all the tricks and I think I've become an expert on this phone.

To answer your question... about copying over music and photos. BEFORE you do this, let me tell you that the Note 2 officially comes with 16GB of storage, but after all the preinstalled apps, you will have about 9GB of usable storage left. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you install a MicroSD card FIRST before you start loading up on media files because you will use up all the phone's storage space in no time. You should be able to find a 32GB card for under $30. Staples had some on sale recently...

METHOD #1
Connect the cable to your computer... should automatically detect your phone... once that is done, your phone will be shown in Computer as a storage device. To copy over your music, just select the files you want to put on your phone and copy them over to the folder that says Music... they will be automatically recognized. For Photos, pictures and videos taken with the phone's camera are stored in the folder DCIM/Camera. There is also another folder on the phone called PICTURES... You can copy stuff to that location too...

If you install a MicroSD card, this all becomes a lot easier for you. I created the following folders on my card: Videos, Wallpaper, Music, & Ringtones. So when I want to copy something onto my phone, I just connect the cable.. and copy/paste the files into their respected folder.

METHOD #2
This next method might be easier for you if you're not comfortable with folders. Just download and install Samsung Kies... It's like their version of iTunes for their devices. It will handle all the media syncing between your device and computer and make backups of your apps and data.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I'll let you know about a few hidden secrets with the phone. Most people don't realize there is a button on the S Pen. You can use the button to edit your texts... and taking screen shots. Keeping your finger pressed on the screen opens up a context menu that allows you to create a Folder on your screen, change wallpaper, or go directly to Apps or Widgets.

The Phone comes with a great File Explorer app called My Files. When you first use it, it seems bland and generic. However, after playing around with it I discovered it's one of my most important apps. You can Add Shortcuts to the links that are displayed. For instance, on my phone, I links to all the important locations I have on my phone that I might have something stored. So I created links (shortcuts) to: Videos, Ring Tones, Screenshots, Wallpaper, and eBooks. So when I want to go to those locations, it's very quick and easy for me.

There is another file manager called ES File Explorer. This is a very useful app because it can be configured to connect to your wireless router and allow you to access shared folders (or any folder you choose) from your phone. so if I want, I can use it to open up my music or video folder on my desktop and stream the media file and play it from my phone. Very useful if you have a huge video collection.

There are tons of other stuff... but you get the idea. If you have any more questions... just send me a message and I'll be happy to offer you some advice or quick tips since I know so much about the Galaxy Note 2. View my Answer History and you'll find other stuff I've said about the Note 2.

Citrify, iPiccy, PicMonkey, Ribbet, FotoFlexer or Lunapic are great all round web based and FREE editing tools. Adobe, makers of the expensive Photoshop, has a free website version in Photoshop Express.

If you need/want more features downloading GIMP is a great options. Still free, but you have to download the software.

What are some photo editing apps that have a lot of different handwriting fonts?

Maria M

I want a really good app with good handwriting fonts from the iTunes App Store.

Answer
Why would there be a lot of different handwriting fonts for any image editing program, much less the limited photo editing apps on the iPhone and iPad? Handwriting fonts that someone one goes to the trouble of making are generally assembled for readability, not variety. You probably will have to hand write your desired text, scan it, and paste into your images.

How many GB does the iPhone OS and contact list take up on the iPhone 3GS?

I have an iPod Classic and am currently using 8 GB of music. I'm looking to buy an iPhone and am trying to figure out whether a 16 GB is big enough or will I need a 32 GB. Thanks!

Answer
The OS takes around 1.5gb (A LARGE SUM) and the contact list, well that is variable.
If you use 8gb of music, allow for say 100 contacts, email, a decent number of apps, the odd movie, and perhaps 100 photo's, i can pretty much bet the 16gb wont be filled.

Music is by far the biggest file type on the iphone. Thing about it carefully, a sim has a tiny memory. Some old nokia and samsung phones have about 216mb internal memory. The contact list does not take up alot of memory at all.

To be honest, I have 8gb of music too, and am a proud owner of a 3gs 16gb. I have a good number of contacts (60) and a LARGE number of apps. I dont have tons of photos but they shouldnt take up much.

Infact ill even tell you how much I have left to assure you! :) 6GB. So i have plenty of room for more photo's, apps and contacts.

Thanks :) RelentlessDan :)

How do I make an entire picture visible on facebook? without having to click on it?

etoilenuit

I'm trying to post a photo to my timeline, but whenever I do, the image is too big to see all of it without clicking on it. It only shows half the picture and it appears huge on the newsfeed instead of a I already resized it through one of my photo apps but when I post, it still looks the same. Frustrating! Btw I'm trying to do this on my iPhone. It seems there should be a way to do this.

Answer
To edit the privacy settings for photo albums you've posted:

1.Go to your profile (timeline) and click on the Photos section

2.Click See All

3.Use the audience selector tool under each album to control who can see your photos
A few important notes:

â The privacy setting for your Cover Photos album is always public.

â If there's a photo of you in an album that someone else posted, only the person who posted it can change the album privacy. If you don't like the photo, you can remove your tag or escalate the issue.

â If you share a high resolution photo or album with someone, that person will be able to download those photos.

â Unlike other photo albums you create, you can choose an audience for individual photos in your Wall Photos and Mobile Uploads albums. Each time you post a new photo, you pick who sees that photo using the audience selector.

How do you get a lot of real followers on Instagram?

dmp101010

I have like 500 almost 600 and most of them are fake. So I would like to know how to get more real or active followers. Follow me @ayeitsdaniellee

Answer
Best ways to gain followers. 10 tips. By Instagram user @jake23mat

1. Use hashtags. Google the top hashtags and copy/paste them on your pictures. You can only do 30 at a time though.

2. Like/Comment on other photos. Other people are more likely to check out your photos once you check theirs out. Also, when you like multiple pictures of a user, they see your username pop up repeatedly on their screen and are more likely to go to your profile.

3. Always reply to other people's comments. If someone says "Nice Photo!!" on one of your pictures, always respond by thanking them. Users are more likely to follow someone they feel they can interract with.

4. Make your account public. People will want to see your photos before they follow you.

5. Post good photos. Nobody wants to see boring photos. Post fun, beautiful, clean, and exciting photos!

6. Use editing apps. Snapseed, Vscocam, Picstitch, and afterlight are great apps to use. These apps are better than the instagram filters.

7. If you must, buy followers. But it shouldn't matter that much.

8. Post regularly, but not too frequently. Once or maybe twice a day is perfect.

9. Realize what time you post your pictures. People aren't going to see your photos at 3am. Now 10am right after people wake up? That's good. Or 6pm right after people get off work? That's great too!

10. Connect your account to facebook. That way your facebook friends will see your instagram account and follow you.

Hope it helps!
My username is @jake23mat on Instagram if you want to check out my feed!

A iPhone App creator is predominate featuring my photos in one of their apps are is being sold. I was not informed or asked if I would mind if my photos could be used. Are they allowed to sell my photography in an app without my permission?
Jeff

Answer
The most important aspect you left out of this question is exactly what type of Creative Commons license you registered your photos under. Creative Commons licensing comes in a range of different "flavors" that allow those registering their work to specify exactly which ways they will allow their work to be used by others.

Most all Creative Commons works include an 'Attribution' release... that is, you allow others to "copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work - and derivative works based upon it - but only if they give you credit." Note that this includes commercial uses of your photograph! If you only attached an 'Attribution' requirement, then it is legal for your photos to be used by anyone for almost any purpose as long as you are given credit for the work.

To prevent commercial use of your work, you would need to have also chosen the 'Non-commercial' rule when registering your photo under Creative Commons. The 'Non-commercial' rule can be applied to any Creative Commons work, and when a work is classified as "Attribution, Non-commercial" then others can "copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work - and derivative works based upon it - but only if they give you credit AND if it is not used commercially."

Other options are available, as well. For instace, you can also add a "No Derivates" rule to your work which prevents others from modifying it from its original form.

Basically, you need to go back and see exactly what rules you chose when you posted your photos under Creative Commons. If you didn't choose the 'Non-Commercial' option, then I'm afraid it is totally legal for the app company to make use of your work... that is, as long as you are credited for the work somewhere in the application! If they didn't give you credit for that photograph, then they are absolutely in the wrong. The downside is that, without you expending some hefty lawyers fees, the best you'll probably get them to do is credit you as they should have.

Creative Commons sounds like a great idea to most people, and it is defnitely a nice advancement in sharing music, photos, and graphics arts... but it is crucial that you understand the exact terms of the Creative Commons rules before you go distributing your masterpieces to the masses.

You can find slightly more details here on flickr concerning the various aspects of Creative Commons licensing... good luck!

Answer
Having used an original iPhone I can tell you it was not right-justified as it would appear to have been in that photo. You can also see here, in the original iPhone announcement, that it was not: http://www.therunningmice.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Original-iPhone-Price.png

I suspect the reason it appears that way in that photo is because there were three more apps to the left of the one in the photo originally that were edited out of the image for one reason or another (my best guess is that they were Safari bookmarks for web apps, since there was no App Store in 1.x, and the photo taker didn't want anyone to see which bookmarks they were using).

What's the best phone on verizon that doesn't need a data plan?

theartofap

State the phone and the pros/ cons

Answer
The good: The HTC ThunderBolt offers incredibly fast 4G data speeds. The Android 2.2 smartphone also supports simultaneous voice and data over 3G and boasts a large 4.3-inch touch screen, ample storage, and an excellent camera.

The bad: Battery life takes a big hit when using 4G. There is no way to toggle between 3G and 4G.

The bottom line: The HTC ThunderBolt lights up with blazingly fast data speeds, but those who want 4G now should be aware that it takes a big toll on the smartphone's battery life.

Photo gallery: HTC ThunderBolt (Verizon Wireless)
Photo gallery:
HTC ThunderBolt (Verizon Wireless)

Introduced at CES 2011, the HTC ThunderBolt is Verizon's first 4G LTE, and it's finally available for $249.99 with a two-year contract. The Android 2.2 smartphone might not offer the latest and greatest (e.g., dual-core processor), but with the carrier promising average download speeds of 5Mbps to 12Mbps and upload speeds of 2Mbps to 5Mbps, it's no surprise why many are clamoring to get their hands on this device. This includes us, which is why we were so excited to take the HTC ThunderBolt out for a test-drive. The lightning-fast smartphone delivers on many fronts, but it also comes at a cost.

Design
The HTC ThunderBolt is cut from the same cloth as the HTC Evo 4G and the HTC Desire HD, so if you've ever handled those devices, then you have a fairly good idea of what to expect from the ThunderBolt.

At 4.75 inches tall by 2.44 inches wide by 0.56 inch thick and 6.23 ounces, the ThunderBolt isn't for those who prefer dainty devices. The smartphone is large and actually slightly thicker and heavier than the Evo, but it's manageable and the tapered back and soft-touch finish make it comfortable to hold in the hand. As we've come to expect from HTC, the phone is solidly built and has a nice, premium feel to it.

On front, you've got the same 4.3-inch WVGA (800x480 pixels) touch screen as the Evo. There are higher-resolution displays out there, like those on the Motorola Atrix 4G or iPhone 4, but the ThunderBolt's screen still holds up, with clear and bright picture quality. Text was easy to read, and Web pages and video looked lovely on the large screen.

The touch screen is also responsive. Apps launched as we tapped them, and we were able to smoothly navigate through the home screens and menus. The display also features a proximity sensor and built-in accelerometer, which was quick to change screen orientation when we rotated the phone.

The front-facing camera sits right above the screen on the right; below the display are the home, menu, back, and search navigation buttons. Meanwhile, the 8-megapixel camera and flash are located on back, but we really wish there was a dedicated camera button on the phone. Instead, you'll have to use the touch screen to snap photos.

On the bright side, the ThunderBolt has a sturdy kickstand so you can prop the phone on a desk to watch videos, conduct speakerphone calls, and the like. There's a Micro-USB port on the left side, and a volume rocker occupies the right side. Finally, on top of the device, you'll find a power/lock button and 3.5mm headphone jack.

The HTC ThunderBolt comes packaged with an AC adapter, a USB cable, a preinstalled 32GB microSD card, and reference material.

4G features and performance
Before we get to the phone's more-basic features, we thought we'd address the HTC ThunderBolt's whole raison d'etre, and that's 4G support. As mentioned earlier, the ThunderBolt is the first smartphone to work on Verizon's LTE 4G network, which promises average download speeds of 5Mbps to 12Mbps and upload speeds of 2Mbps to 5Mbps.

Given the impressive results we got using Verizon's LG VL600 LTE USB modem, you'd think we'd be a little more prepared for what we experienced on the ThunderBolt, but we were still blown away by what we saw. It's fast. Real fast.

Running Ookla's Speedtest.net app on the handset yielded some erratic and suspicious results (upload speeds were registering up to 39.79Mbps), so we also measured speeds using the phone as a mobile hot spot and as a tethered modem. With the ThunderBolt connected to our MacBook Pro as a mobile hot spot here in New York, we were able to get average download speeds of 7.41Mbps and upload speeds of 6.56Mbps.

By comparison, the HTC Evo 4G from Sprint averaged 3.42Mbps down and 0.93Mpbs up; the Samsung Galaxy S 4G on T-Mobile averaged 4.17Mbps down and 1.68Mbps up; and the HTC Inspire 4G on AT&T averaged 1.75Mbps down and 0.31Mbps up.

We got even better results when we had the ThunderBolt tethered to our Lenovo T61 ThinkPad. We averaged download speeds of 15.58Mbps and upload speeds of 3.44Mbps.
