I have been using iTunes for a reasonable six years now, and I've been through four iPods, and iPhone, and soon maybe even an iPad. I currently have an iPhone 4 and and iPod touch 4th generation and both of them have a considerably large amount of media/data on them. On the device summary screen, it's showing on my iPhone I have 1.87 GB of music, .57 GB of video, .28 GB of photos, and 1.24 GB of apps. But I have 1.68 GB of data in the "Other" column and I want to know what data that represents, and what I can do to get rid of it. For years I haven't been able to figure out what is part of the "other" column.

Answer
The "Other" column is basically other things besides music, apps, photos, and video. It could be storage software, podcasts, voicemail, voice memos, email, or iMessage. Most likely, the "other" column is storage software. There is virtually no way you can get rid of it. As your iPod gets older, the storage software takes up more and more space. It kinda sucks :(. But if you REALLY wanna get rid of it, there is a way, but it will reset all of your settings. I recommend writing down all your contacts so that you can put them back in when once the restore is complete.

Okay, to restore your device, plug it into your computer. Sync it to iTunes. Your device name will appear on the left-hand side column. Right click it, and hit Back-Up. Once that is complete, click on the device name. A device summary will come up. In the center of the screen will be a button labeled Restore. Click on that. Wait for everything to finish. The "Other" column will be gone. Your device will be brand new, if that's a good thing.

That's the only way to get rid of the "Other" column.

"other" taking up all the memory on my iPhone?

The space labeled "other" is taking up ALL the memory on my iPhone. It's taking up about 5.2 gigs right now, which is far too much, considering I have hardly any photos, music or data. Also, I just reset my phone so I have no apps, and it is still taking up that much room. How can I go about deleting what is in the "other" category.
Also: my iPhone is not jailbroken

Answer
If your phone is jailbreaked, than this is the issue.
