Get 'em, C

I have heard bad things such as no more YouTube, no more Google Maps, and decreased battery life. What are some good things about the update? Will it make my phone faster? Should I update or just hold out?

Answer
Yes! Although there are some negative aspects in relation to the update, its also got some great features! There is a YouTube app available on the app store which in my thoughts is better than the original YouTube app. Its got a better user interface and just works better. Check it out:

Apple maps aren't bad. People are just overly reacting to some of its issues. Even though some locations are incorrectly labelled, and others not labelled at all, it isn't necessarily in your neighborhood. There are no issues with the maps in my neighborhood and I actually quite like it. Also people claim that the maps are TOO simple and not detailed enough compared to Google's maps. I personally don't mind it and think it looks better (besides Apple is known for its simplicity, right?).

In terms of decreased battery life, I haven't had any problems with my battery so far so don't know what they're going on about. Some other features in iOS 6 include:
> Passbook - This is a really cool app which stores all your passes and coupons. It works great and cant wait to see how developers integrate it in the future.
> Change in User interface for some apps - Some apps like mail, phone, the app store and the iTunes store have had some changes in design. The app store and iTunes store look a lot better now!
> Facebook integration - This is great if you're always on Facebook. It gives you the ability to post statuses and photos directly from your phone.
> More! - There are over 200 new features with iOS 6 like more info from Siri (i have an iPhone 4 so haven't tried that out). You've got to try it out for yourself!

Hope that helps! :D

EDIT: If you have a problem with the maps you can make a bookmark on your home screen to the Google Maps page, where you can continue to use Google maps.

Can I use a real band as an example in an iPhone app design?

Vlad

I'm working on an iPhone app.

I want to use band name and song titles in design mockups that I'll use on the app's website and in a presentation. Do I have to ask permission to do this? I know that band's name isn't a trademark now, but I want to be aware of the possible future consequences, when band's name may become a trademark and band may sign up to some big publisher like Sony or Warner.

Also I want to use album covers (like in iPhone's Music app). I know that such works are copyright objects. Whom should I ask for permission if the band is signed to label?

And what about photos? Should I get permission only from photographer or from band/label too?

Answer
What do you mean you "know that band's name isn't a trademark now"? Are you saying they have never marketed their entertainment services or any copies of their music with their name attached to it? That's all it takes for it to become a "trademark" in the USA, Canada, UK and several other common-law countries.

More to the point, you are certainly allowed to use someone else's trademarks to refer to any offer to sell things that you lawfully acquired. For instance, "buy my Ford Mustang and I will throw in a case of Pepsi." Not an infringement of any trademarks.

You can, however, be sued if you use (copy/distribute) someone else's photographic product without permission. Unless the band owns the copyright, you don't need their permission to use the photographer's works - just permission of the photographer.
