Why do so many people like instagram?

I waited a very long time to finally get an android phone, and finally download instagram.. and its the biggest piece of **** ever... there is no customization on photos, I've known better editing/sharing websites than this.. all my pictures look like shit
why is it so hyped up?

I wanna see if there are any other free websites with FULL FREE USAGE of the photo editing capabilities, like how Picnik did until they shut down. I have some websites here for people looking for more websites also:
Smugmug
Lunapic
PhotoBucket
PsykoPaint (Google Chrome App and a separate website) and then that's really it.
